A program which has already seen residents in the Burdekin secure a share of more than 5000 pathways to jobs last year has opened for a second round with Member for Burdekin Dale Last backing community organisations to become involved.

Highlighting the hardworking success Burdekin’s PCYC had already delivered under the first round of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program, Mr Last said the funding meant communities were able to grow their workforce and connect people with real opportunities in their hometowns.

“In order to grow our local workforce and bolster the Burdekin’s economy, we need to be able to retain young adults in our community and that means ensuring there are positive career pathways available and the ability to obtain the skills needed in our towns,” Mr Last said.

“Last year the Burdekin PCYC conducted one of 180 programs across the state, focussing on providing those transferrable skills and confidence our young adults need to be able to step into the workforce and it is important we continue that momentum with the next group of school leavers.”

“This program backs community organisations that understand their local workforce needs and can help people into employment.”

Mr Last said the $80 million initiative meant Queenslanders who would have otherwise faced barriers in finding work were able to secure jobs and employers had the skilled workforce to continue growth in industries such as construction, health, community services and hospitality.

“The Crisafulli LNP Government is committed to getting Queenslanders the skills they need for the jobs they want, and this program is proof we’re backing them to get to work,” Mr Last said.

Applications for the 2026–27 Skilling Queenslanders for Work funding round close on Thursday 7 May 2026 with a further funding round to be launched later in the year.
