A sunset review into a hard-fought-for federal government safety net in the sugar industry has prompted calls to stakeholders to make their voices heard with submissions opening in recent weeks.

Member for Burdekin Dale Last said the Sugar Code of Conduct’s sunsetting review was an opportunity to recognise the benefits it had provided as well as identifying any improvements needed to cater for industry innovation.

“As the representative of one of our nation’s largest sugar cane growing areas, I was proud to stand with our sugarcane growers to secure the Sugar Code of Conduct as a clear pathway for negotiations between millers and growers,” Mr Last said.

“Following the implementation of the code, we have seen negotiations between millers and growers that would normally have been left to a stalemate, proceed fluently in time for crushing season and produce the economic benefits that would have otherwise fallen by the wayside.”

“The recent State Government inquiry into bioenergy opportunities showed the future of our sugar industry needed a coordinated approach from all stakeholders, so it is just as important the industry is able to forensically examine the regulations which are already in place and provide feedback about how they support the industry going forward.”

Mr Last said the Burdekin’s crucial role in forming the code of conduct nearly a decade ago meant it could not be left out of discussions during the sunset review.

“This district and its industry stakeholders poured their blood, sweat and tears into bringing this code of conduct to fruition so I would expect our stakeholders receive a seat at the discussion table they deserve.”

“If there was ever a time for our cane farmers and industry stakeholders to step up and make their voices heard when it comes to their future it is now, particularly with crucial regulations like the Sugar Code of Conduct subject to review.”

“I will be working closely with the Minister for Primary Industries to ensure our growers’ efforts to bring about this safety net is not left to fade into the distance at the hands of a Federal Labor Government.”

“The Crisafulli Government is backing our farmers whether they are graziers, producing horticulture or growing sugarcane so they are able to prosper well into the future.”
